Animal Bites

October 25, 2022

Traumas resulting from the bite of animals that are at risk of rabies, such as cats and dogs, can cause a lot of anxiety and fear in the patient and their relatives. In these cases, it is necessary to apply to the nearest emergency health institution.

For injuries, there are many variables that are confusing and must be evaluated by the physician, such as whether the subject animal is vaccinated or unvaccinated, whether it can be observed for 10 days or not, the type of injury and whether the patient is vaccinated before exposure.

Wound Treatment

It should begin immediately after animal bites. It is recommended to wash the wound with soap and water for 15 minutes or to use substances such as povidone iodine (baticon), ethanol. Rabies vaccine or immunoglobulin therapy is included in the treatment for each patient after the variables that guide the treatment are evaluated by the physician one by one. In addition, tetanus vaccine and appropriate antibiotic therapy are added to the treatment by physicians when necessary.

When exposed to this type of animal bite, it is necessary to wash light wounds with soap and water, or in cases of bleeding and deeper wounds, the wound should be covered with a clean cloth and pressure should be applied to the nearest emergency health institution.

Remember that for the person infected with rabies, this disease almost always resulted in death. For this reason, close to 100% protection of patients against rabies is ensured with appropriate wound care immediately after exposure, vaccination and immunoglobulin application when necessary.

People who have previously had rabies vaccine should also be evaluated by a physician after exposure.
